TOP 5 LAS VEGAS CINCO DE MAYO PARTY SPOTS
¡Arriba, arriba! ¡Ándale, ándale! In the words of Speedy Gonzalez: “Go, go! Come on, come on!” Saturday is Cinco de Mayo, which begs me to say “Un tequila más, por favor” (one more glass of tequila please”). 1 Tequila, 2 Tequila, 3 Tequila, Floor!
This coming Saturday, May 5th, marks not only the holiday of Cinco de Mayo, but also the Kentucky Derby, which kicks off the Triple Crown racing season. Talk about a doubleheader! This year’s “Cinco de Drinko” will be a little more dangerous than usual, when you throw in the whole Run for the Roses and Mint Julep thing! An exorcist hangover awaits if you throw caution to the wind and imbibe in all things Mexican and Kentuckian. You read it here first, and I will be the first to issue a fair warning and remind you not to mix the grains!
However, you’re big girls and boys and have learned a lesson or two through the years about drinking in excess, and have been taught to enjoy in moderation, and that this applies to everything, especially consumption. Now, you know when to say “no más”. Or perhaps, it’s “I’ll have one more”. If it is the latter, be prepared for Linda Blair-style projectile vomiting, and remember this… it’s not going to be pretty!
CINCO DE MAYO 2018
There are plenty of ways to celebrate the day, which commemorates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862, during the French-Mexican war. Before everyone gets ready for happy hours and parties, it helps to go in with a plan. Las Vegas DMC, Destination Fabulous has 5 (cinco!) suggestions on where you may want to rock a sombrero and get your mariachi on:
Cabo Wabo Cantina at Planet Hollywood: Sammy “The Red Rocker” Hagar’s bar is definitely about partying, but it’s also about having some good food and keeping things just a little more laid back than usual. The menu features tasty Tex-Mex cuisine and lots of tequila, including Hagar’s own Cabo Wabo brand. There is also a Strip-side patio, which is a great place for watching all of the action al fresco.
Señor Frog’s at Treasure Island: Every day is spring break at Señor Frogs. The well-known Mexican party staple has brought its raucous brand of fun and its anything-goes atmosphere to Las Vegas with their location at Treasure Island. Those who have visited a Señor Frog’s in Mexico on spring break know that it’s all about partying and drinking. The staff makes sure you are having a good time, whether it’s pulling you out onto the dance floor or encouraging you to participate in a beer-chugging contest. Señor Frog’s serves just about every rum and tequila-based drink you can think of, including margaritas, daiquiris, mojitos and more, which you can take to go in a souvenir palm tree-shaped cup.
Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Flamingo: There’s no better place to grab a margarita than a place called Margaritaville. Buffett fanatics will get their fix as the singer’s signature songs play continually along with accompanying video throughout the restaurant. Patrons can also dance the night away to live entertainment, performing both indoors and outdoors. The three-level facility features a large outdoor balcony overlooking the Strip. There are several bars, including the centerpiece Volcano Bar, a three-story volcano that erupts over the bar, spilling margarita mix into two giant 300-gallon blenders every hour.
Cinco De Mayo Family Festival Day at Tivoli Village: Kids piñata games, mariachi bands, carnival rides and Mexican festival foods can be enjoyed throughout the day. Margaritas, tacos, and an authentic Cinco Car Show will light the night. All ages welcome! Enjoy a whole day of Cinco celebration in the streets of Tivoli Village including:
Farmer’s & Maker’s Market (9am-3pm)
Kids Activities & Music (11am-7pm)
Mexican Festival Foods (11am-11pm)
Car & Bike Show (4Pm-10pm)
Mariachis & Live Entertainment (4pm-11pm)
LIVE ENTERTAINMENT ON THE MAIN STAGE FEATURING:
MEXICO VIVO • RANDY ANDERSON BAND • CRUSH
CLAUDINE CASTRO BAND • MARIACHI HERENCIA DE LAS VEGAS
FOOD & BEVERAGE FROM LETICIA’S MEXICAN COCINA, PKWY TAVERN, FUSION BEASTRO & MORE!
Cinco De Mayo At the Plaza Hotel & Casino: The Plaza Hotel & Casino is planning downtown Las Vegas’ biggest party to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The Plaza’s Cinco de Mayo party is free to attend and will be under the bright lights of the property’s iconic dome beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.
Lucha Libre Wrestling, a Mariachi Band playing live music, Folklórico Dancers, a Live DJ, Authentic Food & Drinks Specials, and Downtown’s Largest Piñata is how the Plaza celebrates Cinco De Mayo in style. Be sure to attend the best party in the neighborhood!
Only in Las Vegas can you celebrate the Mexican troops defeating the French at Paris, atop the Eiffel Tower! Vegas is home to numerous Mexican restaurants and festive bars where you and your friends can celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The hot spots mentioned are fun any time of the year but come Cinco de Mayo they can’t be beat for the festive atmosphere, luscious margaritas, and Mexican cuisine.
There is nothing wrong with drinking in moderation and doing it socially, but responsibility is key. What is the use of celebrating a day if you get sick or can’t remember it? On second thought, you only live once. Grab a bottle of Mexican mezcal, go loco, and…EAT THE WORM!
BTW, I’m not always up before 7 AM… but when I am, I haven’t gone to sleep. Stay fabulous and thirsty my friends!

P.S. Tequila before mint julep won’t kill-ya!
